Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday updated the profile pictures across all his social media platforms to commemorate the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor, a major military operation launched by India in May 2025. The move quickly drew nationwide attention, with supporters and political observers viewing it as a tribute to the armed forces and the victims of terrorism.
The updated display picture appeared on the Prime Minister’s accounts on platforms including X, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp Channels. The image featured the words “Operation Sindoor” written against a dark background along with elements of the Indian tricolour. One of the letters in the word “Sindoor” was highlighted with vermilion, symbolising traditional sindoor associated with married Hindu women.
The symbolic gesture was seen as an emotional reminder of the events that led to the military operation. Operation Sindoor was launched by India between May 7 and May 10, 2025, following the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22, 2025. The attack shocked the country after terrorists killed 25 tourists and one local tourist guide. Most of the victims were Hindu men visiting the region.
Following the attack, India launched a coordinated military response involving the Indian Army, Air Force, Navy, and the Border Security Force. The operation targeted terror camps and military infrastructure located across the western border in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Officials at the time described the mission as a strong response against cross-border terrorism and a message that attacks on civilians would not go unanswered.
Over the past year, Operation Sindoor has remained a major subject in national security discussions and political debates. Supporters of the government praised the operation as a decisive step against terrorism, while defence experts highlighted the coordination between the country’s security forces during the mission.
By changing his social media profile pictures, Prime Minister Modi appeared to be paying tribute not only to the armed forces involved in the operation but also to the victims who lost their lives in the Pahalgam terror attack. Many BJP leaders and party supporters also shared similar images and messages online, turning the anniversary into a major social media trend across India.
The anniversary has once again brought focus to India’s anti-terror policy and its approach toward cross-border security threats. Political leaders from different parties have acknowledged the sacrifices made by soldiers during such operations, although debates over foreign policy and regional tensions continue.
Social media users reacted strongly to the Prime Minister’s gesture. While supporters praised the patriotic symbolism behind the display picture, critics accused the ruling party of using military operations for political messaging. Despite the differing opinions, the anniversary of Operation Sindoor remains an emotionally significant moment for many Indians.
Security analysts believe the operation marked an important chapter in India’s recent defence history because of the scale of coordination among various armed forces. The operation also reinforced the government’s image of taking a firm stance against terrorism.
As India marks one year since Operation Sindoor, the tribute by the Prime Minister has once again revived memories of the attack, the military response, and the continuing national conversation around security, patriotism, and sacrifice.
