Tamil Nadu’s political atmosphere has become increasingly tense after Governor R. V. Arlekar reportedly asked actor-turned-politician Vijay to prove that he has enough support to form the next government. The development comes after Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, delivered a remarkable performance in the recent Assembly elections and emerged as one of the biggest political forces in the state.
According to reports, Vijay recently met the governor in an attempt to stake claim to form the government. However, the governor was said to be unconvinced about whether the TVK-led alliance actually possesses the required majority in the Assembly. Sources claim that the governor asked Vijay to submit clear evidence showing support from at least 118 MLAs before he can officially be invited to take oath as Chief Minister.
At present, TVK reportedly has 108 seats on its own. The Congress party has extended support with certain conditions, adding a few more seats to Vijay’s camp. Even with this backing, the numbers still appear to be short of the majority mark, leading to uncertainty over government formation. During the discussion, the governor is believed to have questioned how a stable administration could function without solid numbers in the Assembly.
Vijay reportedly assured the governor that he is prepared to face a floor test if required. A floor test is considered the ultimate method to prove majority support inside the Assembly. Sources also suggest that TVK leaders are currently in talks with Left parties and several regional outfits in an effort to strengthen the coalition and comfortably cross the majority mark.
Political observers believe the situation has now turned into a major numbers game. Several parties are being closely watched, including smaller Tamil Nadu-based political groups that could play a deciding role in determining who forms the next government. There are also reports that some legislators from rival camps may be willing to support Vijay if negotiations move in a positive direction.
At the same time, speculation about a possible legal battle has surfaced. Reports indicate that TVK may consider approaching the court if there is further delay in inviting Vijay to form the government. However, party insiders currently say the focus remains on gathering support rather than entering into a constitutional confrontation.
The election results have already changed the political landscape of Tamil Nadu. Vijay’s rise from cinema superstar to a serious political contender has attracted massive public attention. His aggressive campaign against both the DMK and BJP helped TVK gain strong momentum among young voters and first-time voters. Many analysts believe this election marks the beginning of a new political era in the state.
Meanwhile, rival parties continue to closely monitor developments. The coming days are expected to be crucial as alliances, negotiations, and political strategies unfold rapidly. Whether Vijay succeeds in proving his majority or faces further hurdles will likely decide the immediate future of Tamil Nadu politics.
