Actor-turned-politician Vijay has emerged as the central figure in Tamil Nadu politics after his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), delivered a remarkable performance in the 2026 Assembly elections. Although the party fell short of a clear majority, it has quickly moved to initiate the process of government formation by seeking an appointment with the state’s Governor, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar.
TVK secured 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, making it the single largest party in the state. However, it remains 10 seats short of the majority mark, setting the stage for intense political negotiations. Despite this gap, the party’s strong debut has significantly disrupted Tamil Nadu’s traditional political structure, which has long been dominated by established regional parties.
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), led by M. K. Stalin, finished a distant second with 59 seats, while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) secured 47 seats. Other parties recorded smaller numbers, with the Congress winning five seats and the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) taking four.
With no party achieving a full majority, the political spotlight has now shifted to post-election alliances. Sources indicate that TVK has already activated a “Plan B,” reaching out to potential allies to secure the additional numbers required to form the government. Among the likely supporters are the Congress and PMK, both of which are reportedly open to backing a TVK-led administration. However, their support is expected to come with conditions, including demands for ministerial positions.
Meanwhile, Left parties are still in the process of internal discussions and have not yet made their stance clear. Other regional players, such as the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), are also closely watching developments before committing their support.
Vijay is expected to meet newly elected MLAs at the party office as part of the strategy to consolidate internal unity and plan the next steps. His rapid rise from cinema to politics has captured public attention, with many viewing his success as a reflection of a broader desire for change among voters, especially the youth.
The coming days will be crucial as negotiations intensify and alliances take shape. If Vijay manages to secure the required support, he could become the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, marking a historic shift in the state’s political landscape. On the other hand, failure to gather enough backing could open the door for rival parties to attempt forming a coalition government. At this moment, all eyes are on Vijay and his ability to navigate the complex world of coalition politics. His next moves will not only determine the formation of the government but could also redefine the future of Tamil Nadu politics.
