A tragic incident involving a young man from Andhra Pradesh has left a family devastated and sparked concern within the Indian community abroad. Iraganaboyina Chandu, a 26-year-old from Kurnool district, reportedly died by suicide in the United States after facing prolonged stress related to unemployment and financial difficulties.
Chandu had moved to the US with aspirations of building a successful career and supporting his family. He completed his master’s degree from DePaul University in Chicago after earning his BTech from CMR College of Engineering in Hyderabad. He had briefly worked as a developer with Dell Technologies, but had been searching for a stable job for several weeks before the incident.
According to reports, the pressure of unemployment weighed heavily on him. Coming from a modest background, Chandu was deeply concerned about his family’s financial condition. His father, who works as a security guard, had taken on significant financial responsibilities to support his son’s education abroad. Chandu had hoped to soon ease that burden, but his inability to secure a job reportedly left him feeling distressed.
Following his untimely death, members of the Indian community in the US have come together to support his family. A fundraising campaign has been initiated by his friend Rajesh Gurram, aiming to raise approximately $120,000. The funds are intended to cover the costs of transporting his mortal remains back to India and conducting funeral arrangements.
According to the fundraiser details, the process of repatriating a body from the US involves significant expenses, including funeral home services, legal documentation, and international transportation. These costs are estimated to be around $25,000, an amount that Chandu’s family cannot afford on their own. Any additional funds raised will be used to help the family manage the debts incurred during his education.
In an emotional message shared on the fundraising page, Rajesh described Chandu as a kind and supportive individual who always stood by his friends and family. He recalled that Chandu had arrived in Chicago full of dreams and determination, like many international students seeking a better future. Sadly, the challenges he faced became overwhelming, cutting his journey short and leaving his loved ones in deep grief.
The incident has also drawn attention from political leaders. A social media appeal was made to Nara Lokesh, who responded by expressing condolences and requesting assistance from Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu to ensure a smooth and quick repatriation process. The minister confirmed that he is coordinating with relevant authorities to expedite the arrangements.
This heartbreaking case highlights the emotional and financial pressures faced by many students studying abroad. It serves as a reminder of the importance of mental health support and the need for stronger safety nets for young individuals navigating life in unfamiliar environments.
