A major political shift is unfolding in Bihar as senior BJP leader Samrat Choudhary is set to take over as the next Chief Minister, succeeding Nitish Kumar. This move is significant because it would mark the first time a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader assumes the top post in the state.
Choudhary’s elevation follows his selection as the BJP Legislature Party leader, a decision that reflects the party’s growing influence within the ruling NDA alliance. Over the past few years, he has steadily risen within the party ranks and has been entrusted with key responsibilities, including major portfolios like Home and Finance in the state government.
Born in Lakhanpur village in Munger district, Choudhary comes from a strong political background. His father, Shakuni Choudhary, was a well-known regional leader. Samrat Choudhary entered politics in the early 1990s through the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and later held ministerial positions in earlier governments.
His political journey has seen several shifts, including a move to JD(U) before finally joining the BJP in 2017. Since then, his growth has been rapid. He rose to become the state president of the BJP and later served as Deputy Chief Minister, showcasing his administrative capabilities and leadership skills.
Despite facing controversies in the past, Choudhary has managed to maintain his political standing. He has consistently denied allegations related to earlier cases and emphasized his commitment to public service.
One of the key factors behind his rise is his strong connection with the OBC community, particularly the Koeri caste, which holds significant electoral influence in Bihar. The BJP’s decision to project him as a major leader is also seen as a strategy to strengthen its support base among these communities.
In the 2025 Assembly elections, Choudhary secured a convincing victory from the Tarapur constituency, further cementing his position as a key player in Bihar politics. His ability to navigate complex political dynamics and build alliances has made him a trusted figure within the BJP leadership.
His expected appointment as Chief Minister signals a new phase in Bihar’s political landscape. It reflects the BJP’s intent to take a more prominent role in governance and reshape the power balance within the NDA.
