Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Sikkim turned into a lively and memorable moment when he joined local youngsters for a game of football. The interaction, which took place in Gangtok on a pleasant morning, was described by the Prime Minister as an “energising session.” Sharing glimpses of the event on social media, he expressed his joy at spending time with young talents and engaging in sports with them.
The images shared online showed Modi actively participating in the game, smiling and interacting with the players. He later posed for photographs with the youngsters, capturing a cheerful moment against the scenic backdrop of Gangtok. The Prime Minister emphasized how such interactions not only promote fitness but also encourage young people to pursue sports with passion.
During his visit, Modi also highlighted the government’s commitment to strengthening sports infrastructure in Sikkim. He pointed out that special attention is being given to nurturing talent in disciplines like football and archery, which are popular in the region. According to him, creating better facilities and opportunities will help local youth excel at national and international levels.
The Prime Minister further reiterated the importance of the northeastern states in India’s growth story. Referring to them as “Ashtalakshmi,” he described the region as a symbol of prosperity and diversity. He stated that the government is not only following its “Act East” policy but is also focused on “Act Fast” to accelerate development across all eight northeastern states.
In addition to sports, Modi laid strong emphasis on tourism as a key driver of Sikkim’s economy. Addressing an event marking the 50th anniversary of Sikkim’s statehood, he spoke about several infrastructure projects aimed at boosting connectivity and attracting more tourists. Among these initiatives is the proposed expressway connecting Bagdogra in West Bengal to Sikkim, which is expected to significantly reduce travel time.
He also mentioned plans for a ring road in Gangtok to ease traffic and improve accessibility within the city. Furthermore, projects like ropeways and skyways are being considered to enhance the overall tourist experience. Another major proposal includes developing an expressway route towards Nathula, a popular tourist destination, to make travel smoother and more efficient.
Highlighting Sikkim’s natural beauty, Modi described the state as the “Heaven of the East.” He encouraged tourists from across the country and abroad to visit Sikkim, especially to witness its unique biodiversity, including its famous orchids. The Prime Minister also stressed the potential of eco-wellness tourism in the region, which is being actively promoted by the government.
To support this vision, around 1,000 homestays are being developed across Sikkim, providing both accommodation options for visitors and livelihood opportunities for local communities. Adventure tourism is also receiving a boost, with improved infrastructure aimed at attracting thrill-seekers.
As part of his visit, Modi inaugurated and launched development projects worth over ₹4,000 crore in the state. These projects span multiple sectors, including infrastructure, tourism, and connectivity, reflecting the government’s broader vision for the region’s growth. the Prime Minister’s football session with youngsters symbolized more than just a casual game it highlighted the importance of youth engagement, sports development, and a healthy lifestyle.
