Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk is expected to visit India in October for talks aimed at expanding the India-Poland strategic partnership, with economic cooperation, defence, technology and the security situation in Europe likely to feature prominently.
Expected visit
The Indian Express reported that Tusk is likely to visit India from October 21 to 24. The dates have been attributed to sources and should therefore be treated as expected rather than formally confirmed until either government issues an official programme.
If the visit proceeds, it would be Tusk’s first trip to India as prime minister since 2010 and would follow Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to Poland in August 2024.
Strategic partnership
During Modi’s 2024 visit, India and Poland elevated their relationship to a strategic partnership and adopted an Action Plan for 2024-2028. Poland’s official diplomatic material describes the plan as setting priorities for deeper political, economic and strategic engagement.
Poland has become increasingly important in European security because of its geography, NATO membership and proximity to Ukraine and Belarus. For India, Warsaw is also relevant as a gateway to Central and Eastern Europe and as a potential partner in manufacturing, food processing, defence production, clean technology and logistics.
Ukraine and geopolitical differences
The Russia-Ukraine war is likely to form part of high-level discussions. Poland has been among Ukraine’s strongest European supporters, while India has maintained relations with both Kyiv and Moscow and has repeatedly called for dialogue and diplomacy.
Those differing strategic positions do not prevent cooperation but can shape the tone of discussions on European security, sanctions and energy.
Economic agenda
Businesses in both countries have long argued that bilateral trade and investment remain below potential relative to the size of the two economies. A prime-ministerial visit could provide political direction for sector-specific agreements, business forums and investment projects.
The public-interest value for India lies in diversification: stronger economic links with Poland can broaden India’s European partnerships beyond the continent’s largest western economies.
Until the visit is formally announced, however, the schedule remains provisional. Any final agenda, agreements or joint statements should be assessed after official confirmation from New Delhi and Warsaw.
