Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s planned two-day visit to Chhattisgarh has been postponed as the Election Commission faces sustained opposition protests over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
India Today reported that the state Chief Electoral Officer’s office attributed the October 7–8 postponement to “unavoidable reasons.” No official statement cited the protests as the cause.
Timing draws attention
The schedule change comes while opposition parties are demanding Kumar’s resignation and alleging irregularities in electoral-roll revision. The Election Commission and BJP have denied wrongdoing.
Because the official explanation is limited, connecting the postponement directly to the demonstrations would be speculative. The timing, however, ensures the change will be interpreted in a highly charged political environment.
Election Commission under scrutiny
The broader controversy has expanded from technical questions about voter rolls into a dispute about institutional independence and communication between the Commission and political parties.
For voters, the administrative priority remains verifying electoral-roll status and using prescribed claims, objections and enrolment procedures where necessary.
The postponed visit does not by itself change any election or voter-registration deadline. Any revised schedule or procedural change would require a separate official communication from the Election Commission or state election authorities.
