Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has set a 2029 target for providing housing coverage to eligible poor families across the state, placing housing alongside water and rural infrastructure as a major welfare priority.
The announcement came as the state began a new construction push under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin framework. The programme includes the foundation for three lakh rural houses and a pilot that will test 3D-printing technology for a smaller group of homes.
Three lakh homes in new phase
The state government and the Union Rural Development Ministry are working together on the latest phase. Officials expect the programme to combine central assistance, state implementation and local-level beneficiary verification.
The 2029 objective is broader than the immediate three-lakh-house package. Naidu said the government wants every eligible poor family to have access to a house, making beneficiary identification, land availability, infrastructure and construction quality critical to the target.
Technology pilot draws attention
A pilot involving 3D-printed houses is also being undertaken in Guntur district. Supporters of the technology say it can shorten construction schedules and reduce some labour requirements. Its usefulness at scale, however, will depend on cost, durability, local conditions and regulatory acceptance.
Housing programmes often face implementation challenges involving beneficiary lists, land titles, delays in instalments and access to roads, electricity, sanitation and water. The state will therefore need to measure success not only by houses sanctioned but also by completed and occupied homes with basic services.
Political stakes
Housing is a politically important welfare issue in Andhra Pradesh, where successive governments have highlighted their own housing programmes. The ruling coalition is likely to present completion rates as evidence of delivery, while opposition parties can be expected to scrutinise beneficiary selection and execution.
