In a bizarre incident in Hyderabad, police uncovered a high-tech illegal modification in a luxury car that allowed its driver to swap the vehicle’s registration number plate using a remote control. The discovery came during a routine drunk-driving checkpoint in an upscale locality, leaving authorities stunned by the unusual setup.
According to officials, the vehicle, a BMW 5 Series, was stopped as part of standard road-safety enforcement. During inspection, police found that the car had been modified with a concealed mechanism capable of replacing the original number plate with a fake one at the push of a button. The system was allegedly designed to mislead traffic enforcement cameras and evade detection for traffic violations.
During the check, officers also found that the driver was under the influence of alcohol. The unusual mechanism was demonstrated on video by police personnel, showing how the number plate could be flipped or hidden using a remote device. Authorities believe such alterations can be used to escape fines, bypass speed cameras, and avoid identification in case of traffic violations or criminal activities.
A case has been registered against the driver under multiple sections of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, including charges for drunk driving, illegal vehicle modification, and tampering with official registration details. Police emphasized that such modifications are strictly illegal, as they compromise traffic enforcement systems and public safety.
The BMW has been seized by the authorities, and an investigation is underway to determine whether the vehicle was previously used in other offenses or violations. Officials are also probing how and where the illegal modification was carried out, and whether others may be using similar systems to evade the law.
Police warned vehicle owners against such illegal alterations, reiterating that strict action will be taken against offenders who attempt to bypass road safety regulations.
